Filipina domestic helper in Singapore studies for engineering diplomas to move into construction
Jo, a 35-year-old Filipina domestic helper who worked in a Philippine law firm for eight years, is pursuing two engineering diplomas and three BCA-certified courses in Singapore, hoping to become a contract executive or quantity surveyor.
A 35-year-old Filipina domestic helper in Singapore is using her days off and rest time to study for a career in construction, Mothership reported on 17 October. Jo, who came to Singapore to work as a domestic helper around two years ago, is pursuing two engineering diplomas that she expects to complete in about two months, and is enrolled in three courses certified by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
Back in the Philippines, Jo majored in political science under a full scholarship but had to give it up because of a medical condition, and could not afford to complete her degree. She told Mothership she then worked at a hospital intensive care unit, a call centre and a law firm, where over eight years she learnt to draft affidavits, go to court and prepare documents.
That legal work sparked her interest in becoming a contract executive and quantity surveyor in the construction industry, which she calls her dream job. She has also completed several courses offered by overseas universities and hopes to one day study law at the University of London.
Jo described her role as an "honourable stepping stone" and said her employers are very supportive, with manageable work hours that leave time to study. "I want to be the first Filipina helper who earns the most number of engineering diplomas and certificates in Singapore," she said. The Independent Singapore also reported her story on 18 October.
