Pinoy Developer Launches 'AnoUlam' App to Simplify Meal Planning, Manage Budget

Filipino developer Patrick Gabriel Pascual has launched AnoUlam, a new web-based app that uses AI to suggest recipes based on users' budget and available ingredients, aiming to combat meal planning "decision fatigue." The platform also provides local market price data and macronutrient information to support healthier and more cost-effective home cooking for Filipinos globally.

Filipino households grappling with the daily question of "Ano ulam?" now have a new digital ally in AnoUlam, a web-based application developed by Patrick Gabriel Pascual. Launched to combat the common "decision fatigue" associated with meal planning, the app intelligently suggests recipes based on a user's specified budget or the ingredients they already have in their pantry, streamlining the cooking process for many.

AnoUlam's core functionality is driven by artificial intelligence, which not only curates quick and easy meal ideas but also provides comprehensive details for each suggestion. This includes macronutrient information, a clear list of ingredients, and step-by-step recipe instructions. Crucially, the AI automatically calculates ingredient costs based on current prices from local supermarkets in the Philippines, ensuring that meal suggestions align with the user's financial limits while also offering estimated calorie and macronutrient counts to guide healthier dietary choices.

Beyond its primary recipe-generation capability, AnoUlam offers valuable bonus features. The "Price Watch" function allows users to check weekly price drops for common market items, with data sourced directly from the Philippine Department of Agriculture. Additionally, a "Meal Planner" can generate a five-day meal schedule, a feature Pascual noted is particularly beneficial for individuals with strict dietary regimens, such as gym-goers.

The app's emphasis on using available ingredients and budget-friendly options directly supports broader initiatives against food waste. Data from DA-PhilRice indicates that Filipinos collectively waste 542,477.6 metric tons of rice annually, enough to feed over five million people. By encouraging planned meals and efficient ingredient use, AnoUlam aligns with efforts to reduce such wastage. For Filipinos in New Zealand and Australia, where household food expenditure has notably increased, as reported by Stats NZ, tools like AnoUlam can offer practical assistance in managing rising living costs.

Pascual's creation underscores the growing innovation within the Philippine tech ecosystem, which has seen significant growth in recent years, with Manila's startup ecosystem reaching a $6.4 billion valuation.
