Scarborough food passport sends diners to five Filipino restaurants with local art until 27 November

By Kislap Editorial ·

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce Toronto's Tara Na! Kain Tayo sa Scarborough food passport runs from 6 October to 27 November at five Scarborough restaurants, with local artists' work on display and a draw for a $500 prepaid Visa card on 1 December.

A six-week food passport program is encouraging diners to explore Filipino restaurants and local art across Scarborough, Frequency reported on 16 October. Tara Na! Kain Tayo sa Scarborough, presented by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce Toronto (PCCT), runs from 6 October to 27 November at five participating restaurants.

Diners pick up a passport, try featured menu items and collect a stamp at each location. Those who complete all five stops can enter a draw for a $500 prepaid Visa card on 1 December. The participating restaurants are Tagpuan Toronto, Lakay Kusina, Suave Korner-Kafe & Bistro, Remely's Restaurant and Coffee In.

The project is part of Destination Scarborough's Cuisine and Culture Activation Program, led by Scarborough Arts and supported by the City of Toronto. Destination Scarborough lists it as the Tara Na: Passport Experience by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce Toronto, starting on 6 October.

PCCT president Von Canton said the chamber saw the program as a way to support Filipino-owned restaurants while using food to introduce people to the community's culture. "Many of these restaurants offer exceptional food, but they may not have the marketing budget or resources to reach customers beyond their existing communities," Canton said.

Five local artists are also featured, with their work displayed at participating restaurants. Toronto artist Sabrina De Leon's painting of a colourful jeepney arriving in Toronto hangs at Tagpuan restaurant near Victoria Park Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East. "My hope is that my artwork can bring strangers together, spark conversations, and create opportunities for meaningful connections," De Leon said.
