Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts hosts "Every Move Matters" at Knox Library for the Victorian Seniors Festival

By Kislap Editorial ·

Filipino-Australian Eddie Atacador's Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts held another "Every Move Matters" chess event at Knox Library – Ngarrgoo in Wantirna South on 17 October for the Victorian Seniors Festival, with Consul-General Jesus "Gary" Domingo and Knox Mayor Paige Kennett making the first moves on the giant chessboard.

Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts (KCCE) organised another "Every Move Matters" chess event on 17 October at Knox Library – Ngarrgoo at Westfield Shopping Centre in Wantirna South, as part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival, The Philippine Times reported.

KCCE founder and president Eddie Atacador, a 2025 Victorian Seniors Award recipient, officiated in the presence of special guest speaker Consul-General Jesus "Gary" Domingo, Knox Mayor Paige Kennett, Dinsdale Ward Cr Robert Williams and Coonara Community House CEO Sandra Romero. "In chess, every move has a purpose. In life, too, every step we take, every friendship we build and every contribution we make can have a lasting impact," Atacador said.

Consul-General Domingo described Atacador as a "great Filipino, a great Australian", while Mayor Kennett and Cr Williams acknowledged KCCE's role in reducing isolation among older people. Domingo and Kennett then made the first moves on the giant chessboard to start KCCE's simultaneous exhibition games, and the traditional Filipino game of sungka also engaged attendees.

Atacador started the group in 2017 by setting up a chessboard in a corner of Westfield Knox, The Philippine Times reported earlier this month. On 3 October, KCCE led "Every Move Matters" at the Victorian Seniors Festival Celebration Day at Federation Square, with table chess, giant chessboard games and a simultaneous exhibition.

KCCE has free chess meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Westfield Knox Community Space and every Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m. at Rowville Library at Stud Park Shopping Centre. Beginners, casual players, retirees, students and experienced competitors are welcome.
