Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign glows red, blue and yellow for Filipino American History Month

By Kislap Editorial ·

NaFFAA Nevada celebrated Filipino American History Month at the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign on 15 October, as the landmark was lit in the colours of the Philippine flag and Clark County Commissioner April Becker presented a proclamation.

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign was lit in red, blue and yellow, the colours of the Philippine flag, to mark Filipino American History Month, the Philippine Times of Southern Nevada reported. On Thursday 15 October, the Nevada chapter of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA-NV) rallied at the landmark to celebrate the month.

Clark County Commissioner April Becker presented NaFFAA-NV with a proclamation certificate recognising Filipino American History Month. "Filipino Americans have helped shape Southern Nevada for generations, building businesses, caring for patients, teaching our children and serving our country," Becker said in a county announcement ahead of the ceremony. "Lighting this landmark in red, blue and yellow is Clark County's way of saying thank you and inviting everyone to learn this history and join the celebration."

NaFFAA-NV President Dr Michael Sta. Juana said the celebration honoured Filipino American heritage and brought the community together. Philippine Honorary Consul in Las Vegas Amie Belmonte and community leader Gloria Caoile spoke about the work Filipino Americans do across Clark County, in schools, hospitals, department stores and government, and many in the crowd wore traditional Filipino attire.

Filipino American History Month marks the arrival of the first recorded Filipinos in what is now the continental United States, at Morro Bay, California, in October 1587, and Congress formally recognised it in 2009. The Philippine Times of Southern Nevada listed more events scheduled this month, including the 4th Las Vegas Filipino Short Film Festival from 30 October to 1 November and the Philippine Ballet Theatre's Sarimanok on 31 October.
