AJ Manas finishes runner-up to Joshua Filler at the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball in Doha

By Kislap Editorial ·

Filipino teenager AJ Manas lost 13-6 to Germany's Joshua Filler in the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball final at the Ezdan Palace Hotel in Doha, taking home US$40,000 as the lone Filipino in the semifinals.

Filipino teenager AJ Manas finished runner-up at the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball, losing 13-6 to Germany's Joshua Filler in the race-to-13 final at the Ezdan Palace Hotel in Doha, SPIN.ph and Billiard News reported.

Filler took the US$100,000 top prize, while Manas collected US$40,000. SPIN.ph called the runner-up finish the biggest accomplishment of the 19-year-old's young career, and Billiard News described it as the biggest result of his career.

Lone Filipino in the semifinals

Billiard News said Manas was the last of seven Filipinos who reached the last 16. According to SPIN.ph, defending champion Jonas Magpantay bowed out in the round of 16 together with Carlo Biado, Jundel Mazon, Rocky Tullao and Jerico Bonus, while Miguel Salvilla reached the quarterfinals before losing to Filler 11-7.

Manas's route to the final, as reported by SPIN.ph and Billiard News:

  • came through the losers' bracket after a 9-4 qualifying defeat to Daniel Maciol of Poland
  • knocked out Mustafa Alnar of Syria and compatriot Jundel Mazon
  • beat Hsieh Chia Chen of Chinese Taipei 11-8 in the quarterfinals after trailing 0-3
  • edged Maciol 11-10 in the semifinals after overcoming a 6-1 deficit

Filler's first Qatar title

Billiard News said the title is Filler's first at the Qatar World Cup 10-Ball, with Magpantay and Maciol winning the previous two editions. The champion's US$100,000 came from a US$450,000 prize fund, and beaten semifinalists Wojciech Szewczyk and Maciol took US$15,000 each.

Another close shave

The Philippine Star noted that Manas, the cue artist known as "Starboy", took up billiards at seven years old in pool halls in Antipolo. It was another close shave for him after finishing runner-up at the WPA Men's Doubles 10-ball World Championship earlier this month in Bali, Indonesia, where he teamed up with mentor Carlo Biado.

SPIN.ph said the Doha result was a huge bounce back for Manas after his showing in this year's Reyes Cup and an early exit in the Philippine Open.
