All-Filipino softball team Fate seeks new players in Hong Kong as longtime captain Don Gaborno steps back
Fate, the all-Filipino women's softball team formed in Hong Kong in 2012, is looking for new players ahead of the Hong Kong China Softball Association league season starting in mid-November, after co-founder and captain Don Gaborno decided to take a break from the sport, The SUN HK reported.
Fate, the all-Filipino softball team in Hong Kong, is looking for new players to join the upcoming league season of the Hong Kong China Softball Association, which starts in the middle of November, The SUN HK reported on 31 October.
The call came as Don Gaborno, Fate's co-founder, team captain and star player, announced her decision to take a break from the sport, citing exhaustion and a lack of incentive to carry on, according to the paper.
Who the team is looking for
The search for new players was announced by Pamela, the daughter of Gaborno's co-founder and Fate's late manager Law Wai Ho, who passed away in June 2022, The SUN HK said.
According to the report, the team is looking for pitchers, catchers and players for all other positions that Filipinos or other non-local players may fill. Players must commit to weekend league games and team practices at the team's home pitch on Tin Kwong Road, or occasionally in Shek Kip Mei, Kowloon. The SUN HK published the coach's contact details for those interested.
Fourteen years on the field
Since its founding in December 2012, and with Law Wai Ho's moral and financial support, Fate got into the Hong Kong Softball Association League and won enough games to join the elite Bracket A category, The SUN HK reported. The paper said Law paid for the team's uniforms, equipment and league registration fee, and made an effort to be with the players during their Sunday trainings and games.
In March 2025, The SUN HK reported that Fate had beaten local rival SCAA-Star 3-2 at the Tin Kwong playground on 23 February 2025, its first win over that team in 12 years. SCAA-Star had ranked second in the 2023-2024 season, when Fate finished fifth, the paper said.
