Auckland's City Rail Link Shatters Train Patronage Records in First Week

Auckland's new City Rail Link (CRL) has set a new record for weekly train boardings, with over half a million trips in its first seven days, signaling a strong public embrace of the enhanced network. Further service expansions are planned, promising improved connectivity for residents, including Filipino families and workers.

Auckland's newly operational City Rail Link (CRL) has quickly transformed public transport in the city, with the passenger rail network recording its busiest week ever. Between September 13 and September 19, 2026, a total of 528,007 train boardings were logged, surpassing the previous weekly record from 2019. This significant jump in usage, approximately 62% higher than the week before the CRL opened, highlights how Aucklanders, including many Filipino commuters, are embracing the revamped train system.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop noted that the strong initial performance, coupled with consistently high punctuality and reliability in the mid-to-high 90% range, is crucial for building public confidence in the CRL as a viable alternative to car travel. Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need to further grow patronage to ensure the city reaps the full benefits of this major infrastructure investment. The initial weekday commute using CRL services was already being described as a “game changer” by Auckland Transport in mid-September, according to Scoop News.

The CRL network initially launched with a reduced “transitional” timetable, but Auckland Transport (AT) has already outlined plans for service expansion within the next six months. A first round of improvements, expected in November and December, will see eight trains an hour during rush hour on Western Line services to Henderson and extended evening services on Friday and Saturday nights. Further increases are planned for around February 2027, impacting Southern Line services. These expansions will offer more frequent and convenient travel options, making it easier for Filipino residents to access work, school, and community events across Auckland.
