Canada's new year-round clocks shift the time gap to the Philippines in four provinces and territories
Most of B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories kept their clocks unchanged on November 1, so the Philippines is now 15 hours ahead of Vancouver, 14 ahead of Calgary and Edmonton, and 13 ahead of Toronto and Winnipeg.
Daylight saving time ended in parts of Canada on Sunday, November 1, but millions of residents did not turn their clocks back this year, the Philippine Canadian Inquirer reported on November 2. Several provinces and territories have moved to year-round time, which changes how far behind the Philippines many Filipino Canadians now are.
According to the Inquirer, most of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories kept their clocks unchanged. Saskatchewan and Yukon already keep fixed time all year. Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and much of Atlantic Canada turned their clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. local time.
Who changed what
| Province or territory | New year-round time |
|---|---|
| Most of British Columbia | Permanent daylight saving time, UTC-7 |
| Alberta | Alberta Time, UTC-6 |
| Manitoba | Manitoba Standard Time, UTC-5 |
| Northwest Territories | UTC-6 |
| Ontario west of the 90th meridian, including the Kenora area | UTC-5, under Ontario Regulation 333/26 |
The Inquirer notes that some communities in northern and southeastern B.C., including the East Kootenay and Golden region, keep separate local time rules under the province's guidance.
Manitoba's government says its new official time, Manitoba Standard Time, is the same as the daylight saving time the province used from March to November. "On Nov. 1, 2026, Manitobans will not turn their clocks back one hour," the province says, and its clocks will not spring forward next March either.
What it means for calls home
The Philippines does not observe daylight saving time. As of November 2, the Inquirer says, the Philippines is:
- 15 hours ahead of Vancouver
- 14 hours ahead of Calgary and Edmonton
- 13 hours ahead of Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Winnipeg
Within Canada, Vancouver is now two hours behind Toronto rather than three during the winter months, and Winnipeg and Toronto share the same local time. The Inquirer says the changes may shift the usual times for calls and video meetings with relatives abroad.
Check your calendar
In an October 31 reminder, Manitoba asked residents to make sure devices and systems are up to date and to confirm travel departure and arrival times and medical appointment times. Its guidance warns that recurring meetings, and meetings set up by someone outside Manitoba, may show an hour earlier or later than intended and may need to be fixed by hand. Travellers are told to confirm the local time at their destination rather than assume the usual difference. For regions that still change their clocks, the next shift is on March 14, 2027, when clocks move forward one hour, according to the Inquirer.
