DivinaLaw brings free Dulog Legal consultations to Filipino workers in Tokyo

By Kislap Editorial ·

Philippine law firm DivinaLaw held a free legal outreach for OFWs in Roppongi, Tokyo, on 24 October, covering immigration, employment, family disputes, online scams and unregistered births, with the Philippine Embassy represented by Acting Consul General Robert D. Quintin.

Philippine law firm DivinaLaw held its Dulog Legal outreach in Roppongi, Tokyo, on Saturday 24 October, offering free legal advice to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on immigration, employment, family disputes and other legal concerns, the Daily Tribune reported. The Philippine Embassy in Tokyo had listed the event for 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Karaoke Kan Roppongi Honten.

The outreach was part of the firm's 20th anniversary activities. Managing Partner Nilo Divina joined the consultations, which ended with individual sessions where lawyers listened to participants' concerns and gave legal guidance.

"Your dignity does not end when you leave the airport," Divina told participants.

What was covered

DivinaLaw Partner Floro C. Balato Jr., a former senior official at the Bureau of Immigration, led a discussion on immigration requirements, constitutional rights, online scams and legal remedies available to Filipinos facing difficulties abroad. InsiderPH reported that discussions also covered children born in Japan whose births were never registered with Philippine authorities, and Filipinos whose marriages have ended under Japanese law but remain legally binding in the Philippines, since overseas divorces are not automatically recognised in the Philippines.

Senior Partner Jose M. Layug Jr. explained the purpose of the programme. "We are here now to approach you, and you can approach us," Layug said. Dulog Legal takes its name from the Filipino word meaning to approach or bring closer, according to InsiderPH.

Community support

Filipina businesswoman Abby Watabe offered the venue. "I sponsored this because I want you to have knowledge of the law, to understand the legal problems we face and the things we don't know about," she told InsiderPH. Philippine Embassy Acting Consul General Robert D. Quintin, representing Ambassador Mylene Garcia-Albano, thanked DivinaLaw and Watabe for supporting the Filipino community.

InsiderPH said the programme began as a free legal clinic in a Caloocan barangay in 2022 and has since brought DivinaLaw's lawyers to Filipino communities in Hong Kong and Chongqing, China, before Tokyo.
