Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac personally accompanied the send-off of 50 stranded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and four children at Qassim International Airport on Wednesday, 28 October, The Filipino Times reported. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said it provided P3.2 million in assistance to support their return to the Philippines.
According to the DMW, the repatriation was arranged through the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Riyadh, in coordination with the Philippine Embassy and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). The assistance was provided through the DMW's AKSYON Fund under the Unified Package of Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) Program.
Children included
Four children of OFWs were included in the repatriation. The DMW said their inclusion reflected the need to extend assistance to migrant workers' families, particularly children affected by difficult circumstances overseas.
The DMW did not specify the circumstances that left the workers stranded, how long they had been awaiting repatriation, how the assistance was divided among the returning workers, or the flight details.
Earlier batches
GMA News reported on 20 October that another 50 OFWs from Saudi Arabia had arrived at Ninoy Aquino International Airport, bringing the number of recently repatriated Filipinos to 84, according to OWWA. OWWA said it was arranging the repatriation of about 300 OFWs in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh and the Migrant Workers Office in Saudi Arabia, after airlines cancelled flights between Riyadh and Manila amid ongoing tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen-based Houthi rebels.
The DMW said it would continue coordinating with Philippine diplomatic and labor officials in Saudi Arabia to provide welfare assistance, facilitate repatriations and respond to the needs of distressed Filipino workers.
