New Zealand's AEWV: 2026 Rule Changes Update Occupations, Clarify Work Locations

By Kislap Editorial ·

New Zealand has introduced several updates to its Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) scheme in 2026, including the recognition of 47 new occupations, reclassification of three roles on the National Occupation List, clarified work location rules, and new provisions for pausing Job Change applications.

The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) remains New Zealand's primary temporary work visa, and its framework continues to evolve with a series of changes introduced in 2026. These updates, building on earlier reforms from 2025, address language skills, occupation classifications, and employment conditions, impacting both employers and Filipino migrants planning their journey or already working in New Zealand.

From March 9, 2026, Immigration New Zealand (INZ) recognized 47 additional occupations at skill levels 1 to 3 on its National Occupation List (NOL), which is gradually replacing the former ANZSCO classification system. This expansion allows more roles to qualify for AEWV applications. Concurrently, three specific roles—Kennel Hand, Pet Groomer, and Nanny—were reclassified from skill level 3 to skill level 4. This reclassification means that any Job Check applications for these roles submitted on or after March 9, 2026, must meet the requirements for skill level 4, which typically include a shorter maximum stay and the applicable English language requirement.

New details have also emerged regarding the English language requirement, which expanded to skill level 3 roles from June 1, 2026. While already impacting many AEWV applicants, specific exemptions apply. Migrants holding an existing AEWV that expires on or before December 1, 2026, are exempt from this requirement when applying for a further skill level 3 AEWV to utilize the remainder of their maximum stay. Additionally, those who have previously provided evidence of English proficiency in an earlier application are considered to have met the requirement.

Further clarifications to work location rules for AEWV holders are now in effect, providing a six-week allowance for temporary changes in work location. This aims to offer flexibility for employers and workers. Moreover, INZ introduced a policy from November 17, 2025, allowing Job Change applications to be paused in serious cases, such as business sales or restructures, providing a mechanism for the immigration system to adapt during significant organizational transitions.
