New Zealand Sees Record Citizen Numbers as British Migrants Top List

New Zealand has reported a record number of new citizens in the past year, with British migrants returning to the top spot for the first time in five years, while India has shifted to third place. This surge in citizens comes as processing times improve, following a period where South Africans had surpassed Filipinos in citizenship ranks.

New Zealand has recorded an unprecedented surge in new citizens, with 51,632 individuals gaining citizenship in the past year, according to recent figures from the Department of Internal Affairs. This marks a substantial increase of 12,000 from the previous 12 months, setting a new record for the nation. For the first time in five years, British migrants have reclaimed the top position, with 5,955 individuals becoming New Zealand citizens.

The latest statistics show South Africans closely behind British migrants, contributing 5,939 new citizens, while India, which had been the leading source country since 2022, now ranks third with 5,896. This shift indicates a changing landscape of migrant communities gaining New Zealand citizenship. In 2024, official figures reported that India remained the top source country, but South Africans had surpassed Filipinos to become the third-largest group of overseas-born citizens, according to RNZ and Indian Weekender reports at the time.

The overall climb in citizen numbers is expected to continue, driven by over 200,000 people who obtained residency through a Covid-era fast-track process and are now becoming eligible for citizenship after a five-year period. A significant portion of these, more than 54,000, became residents in late 2021 and early 2022. This ongoing eligibility will likely sustain high application volumes.

Filipino migrants in New Zealand, many of whom are on pathways to residency and eventually citizenship, may find assurance in improved processing times. The Department of Internal Affairs reports that 91 percent of citizenship decisions are now made within four months, a considerable improvement from previous complaints of one to two-year waiting periods. This efficiency can provide greater certainty for those navigating their citizenship journey.
