A New Zealand Army corporal has made history by participating in the Balikatan cyber drills in the Philippines, marking the first time a New Zealand soldier has joined this significant security exercise. This involvement saw the corporal gain hands-on experience working with US and Philippine forces in a simulated cyber threat hunt, an important step in enhancing regional cybersecurity capabilities.

This unprecedented participation underscores New Zealand's deepening commitment to security cooperation within Southeast Asia, particularly with the Philippines. During Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's April 2024 visit to the Philippines, he and President Bongbong Marcos discussed elevating the New Zealand-Philippines relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership. New Zealand's development cooperation partnerships in Southeast Asia also reflect this strengthened focus, backed by increased International Development Cooperation (IDC) funding.
