Philippine Embassy and ANU Film Group celebrate Halloween with ACT Filipinos at Forgotten Island screening

By Kislap Editorial ·

The Philippine Embassy in Canberra and the ANU Film Group celebrated Halloween with the ACT Filipino community through a special screening of Forgotten Island, a DreamWorks animated film rooted in Filipino folklore and mythology.

The Philippine Embassy in Canberra, in partnership with the Australian National University Film Group, celebrated Halloween with the ACT Filipino community through a special screening of the DreamWorks animated film Forgotten Island, SBS Filipino reported in its 1 November news bulletin.

The embassy's event listing set the screening for 5pm on Saturday 31 October at the Lowitja O'Donoghue Cultural Centre. Admission was free, but registration was required and tickets were limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

A film rooted in Filipino folklore

The ANU Film Group described Forgotten Island as a DreamWorks animated fantasy "notable for being rooted in Filipino folklore and mythology", co-directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado. The group's programme page listed the screening as "presented in partnership with the Embassy of the Philippines".

The story, set in the 1990s Philippines according to the film group, follows best friends Jo and Raissa, who are transported to the island of Nakali, a place packed with magical and mythological creatures they grew up hearing about from their Filipino families. To return home, they face losing every shared memory of their friendship.

The embassy's listing called the film "a celebration of friendship, imagination and Filipino storytelling". Both the embassy and the film group named H.E.R., Liza Soberano and Lea Salonga among the voice cast.

Halloween with a Filipino twist

SBS Filipino's bulletin carried the Canberra screening alongside its report on the inaugural World Surf League Philippines Pro at Cloud 9 in Siargao, which runs from 31 October to 10 November.
