The Philippine Embassy in Japan, through the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Tokyo, organised the "Mabuhay Ka, Sensei!" gala honouring Filipino teachers in Japan on 11 October at Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo in Ikebukuro. The embassy said the event was part of its commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the normalisation of Philippines-Japan diplomatic relations.
Close to 300 Filipino teachers and educators attended, together with representatives of partner organisations, according to the embassy.
Recognition beyond the classroom
"Tonight, we give recognition to our Filipino teachers and educators in Japan. Your contribution goes beyond teaching in the classroom. Every day, you introduce your students to another culture, build connections with Japanese colleagues and communities, and show through your work the talent, professionalism, warmth, and dedication of the Filipino people," Deputy Chief of Mission Christian de Jesus said, delivering remarks on behalf of Ambassador Mylene J. Garcia-Albano.
The embassy said the gala featured testimonies and cultural performances from representatives of participating organisations, including Filipino English Teachers in Japan (FETJ)-Global, the Japan Philippine Cultural Exchange Organization (JPCEO) and the Philippines-Japan Teachers Association (PJTA). Teachers who shared their stories included FETJ-Global founder Aurora Dobashi, FETJ-Global national training director Veo Peralta and PJTA president Julius June Veloso.
Labor Attaché Ramon Lamberto C. Pastrana of MWO-Tokyo led the awarding of certificates of appreciation to partner entities, including Smiles Mobile Remittance. Pastrana and Welfare Officer Geronico M. Herrera led the embassy's coordinating committee for the event.
A YouTube upload from the evening by the Filipina Edupreneur in Japan & Beyond channel described it as a teachers' gala night in the Fuji Banquet Hall of Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo, celebrating the vital role of Filipino English educators in Japan.
