By Kislap Editorial ·

The Philippines and Singapore exchanged letters of intent on exploring cross-border electricity interconnection and on capability development in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy at the opening of Singapore International Energy Week 2026.

The Philippines and Singapore exchanged letters of intent on exploring cross-border electricity interconnection and on collaboration in capability development in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore said. The exchange took place on the opening day of the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) Summit 2026 at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre.

The exchange was witnessed by Philippine Department of Energy Secretary Sharon Garin and Singapore's Minister for Energy and Industry Dr Tan See Leng. According to ABS-CBN News, the nuclear letter covers deepening understanding of advanced nuclear technology, human resource development, nuclear waste management and civil liability frameworks, through information exchange, official and expert exchanges and research cooperation.

At a SIEW ministerial dialogue, Garin said progress on the ASEAN Power Grid must be supported by fair bilateral agreements, compatible regulations and clear benefits for participating countries, citing Philippine efforts to explore electricity connectivity with Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, the embassy said.

Speaking to reporters, Garin said the government wanted to approach nuclear power carefully and was soliciting proposals, adding that it was confident about building a plant within the next decade, ABS-CBN News reported. Tan said Singapore sees nuclear as a promising pathway and that, should it adopt nuclear power, it would uphold the highest standards of nuclear security and safeguards.
