The Philippines formally handed over the chairmanship of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) and ADMM-Plus to Singapore on Thursday, 29 October, INQUIRER.net reported. Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. turned over the chairmanship to Singapore's Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing during a ceremony in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
Singapore will chair both mechanisms in 2027, succeeding the Philippines, which hosted the 20th ADMM and 13th ADMM-Plus on 28 and 29 October.
Singapore's priorities
Chan said Singapore will seek to make regional defence cooperation more forward-looking, adaptable and resilient to challenges ranging from climate change and cyber threats to conventional warfare and humanitarian emergencies.
"Our job is not to look for yesterday's answers to yesterday's questions. Our challenge is always to rise to the occasion and look for tomorrow's answers for tomorrow's challenges," Chan said in his remarks. He also called for closer cooperation among ASEAN member states and their dialogue partners.
Teodoro on the handover
Teodoro said this year's meetings had laid the groundwork for stronger regional defence cooperation, and that the Philippines will work closely with Singapore for a smooth transition.
"Ultimately, in our ever-changing world, what must remain constant is the unity, centrality and solidarity of Asean," he told the audience.
The meetings
Singapore's Ministry of Defence said ahead of the meetings that Chan will be in Cebu from 27 to 30 October, and will attend the 20th ADMM on 28 October, along with the ASEAN-US and ASEAN-Japan defence ministers' informal meetings, and the 13th ADMM-Plus on 29 October. The ADMM-Plus brings together the 11 ASEAN member states and eight Plus countries.
The ADMM serves as ASEAN's highest defence consultative and cooperative mechanism.
