By Kislap Editorial ·

Hosts Team Qatar took the overall title at the fifth GCC Filipino golf tournament, organised by the Philippine Golf Association Qatar on 9 and 10 October, with Team UAE first runner-up and Team Kuwait second runner-up.

Team Qatar captured the overall championship of the fifth GCC Filipino golfers' tournament after two rounds on two Doha courses on 9 and 10 October 2026, The Global Filipino Magazine reported. Team UAE placed first runner-up and Team Kuwait second runner-up.

The tournament was organised by the Philippine Golf Association Qatar (PGAQ) and drew players representing Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE and Oman, Asian Telegraph Qatar reported. According to The Global Filipino Magazine, the opening round was played at Education City Golf Club before the field moved to Doha Golf Club for the final round, followed by a prize-giving ceremony.

PGAQ president and chief organiser Charlotte Gapasin told Asian Telegraph that the annual tournament rotates among GCC countries, with last year's edition held in Abu Dhabi. Founded in 2008, PGAQ now has around 70 members, about 40 of them Filipinos, and Gapasin said she hopes to create more opportunities for women to participate competitively.

Individual honours

The Global Filipino Magazine reported several Day 2 awards for UAE players:

  • Le Jan Leyble won the Class B championship and the Men's Longest Drive Award
  • Harry Soliao topped Class C
  • Meng Din took the Women's Longest Drive Award
  • Sonny Vitug won the Longest Putt Award

The UAE team, a 12-member delegation drawn mostly from Dubai and Abu Dhabi and led by team captain Victor Liwanag, was a combined effort between two clubs, UAE FilGolfers and FOREway Club.

Philippine Ambassador to Qatar Mardomel Celo D. Melicor, attending the tournament for the first time, described the event as a demonstration of camaraderie, goodwill and sporting passion, Asian Telegraph reported. Team Saudi Arabia captain Benjamin Santuyo said nine players attended, although 12 had initially planned to take part, and Oman's sole participant, Jindrex Rapacon, encouraged more Filipinos in Oman to take up golf.

Ahead of the tournament, PGAQ and Qabayan Radio signed a memorandum of understanding on 6 October 2026 to collaborate on activities that benefit the Filipino community in Qatar, Qabayan Radio reported.
