Three Filipinos bound for Malaysia stopped at NAIA over suspected trafficking, with no job offers in hand
The Bureau of Immigration stopped three Malaysia-bound Filipinos at NAIA Terminal 3 who had no legitimate job offers, turning them over to anti-trafficking authorities and warning against travel-first job arrangements.
Philippine immigration officers stopped three Filipinos bound for Malaysia at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 after finding they had no legitimate job offers there, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said. The Manila Times reported that the three were travelling to Kuala Lumpur via Singapore.
The passengers initially claimed they were coworkers taking a vacation. Inconsistencies in their employment records, financial capacity and travel declarations led officers to look further, and the three said their employment arrangements would be discussed only upon their arrival in Malaysia.
The passengers were turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation and assessment. The Global Filipino Magazine reported that investigators also looked into how the three had been recruited and how their travel documents and plane tickets were obtained.
A warning for job seekers
"An overseas job offer should never require you to travel first and find out the details later," Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said.
The BI warned that trafficking syndicates exploit social media, false job offers, misleading travel declarations and promises of high salaries to recruit Filipinos for overseas work. Some victims are ultimately exposed to forced labor, exploitation or fraudulent online operations.
Second Malaysia-linked case this month
The Global Filipino Magazine said this was the second Malaysia-linked interception at Terminal 3 this month. Earlier in October, BI officers stopped a man who presented himself as a tourist bound for Malaysia but carried a passport with a departure stamp the BI Forensic Documents Laboratory confirmed was fake.
The bureau has also told departing Filipinos to answer truthfully during immigration inspection and to make sure their travel and employment documents are authentic, complete and consistent with the stated purpose of their trip.
