Tucson baker Kei Ann Mandanas hosts third annual Sabor ng Bayan on 7 November

By Kislap Editorial ·

Kei Ann Mandanas, the owner and baker behind Ate Kei's Filipino Treats, will host her third annual Sabor ng Bayan event at Tucson's Fourth Avenue Coalition Space on Saturday 7 November, with Filipino food, performances, a lumpia-eating contest and karaoke.

Kei Ann Mandanas, the owner and baker behind Ate Kei's Filipino Treats, will host her third annual Sabor ng Bayan event in Tucson on Saturday, 7 November, #ThisIsTucson reported on 3 November.

The event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Fourth Avenue Coalition Space, 311 E. 7th St. #ThisIsTucson describes it as her love letter to the Philippines, featuring local vendors, cultural performances, a lumpia-eating contest, karaoke and her ube and white chocolate chip cookies.

“Sabor ng Bayan is really the greatest space to appreciate our culture, our food, our talent and also let people know we are a part of the Tucson community too, and we're happy to share,” Mandanas said.

How it started

Mandanas started baking treats inspired by the food she and her family enjoyed in the Philippines in 2023. The idea for Sabor ng Bayan came from her time vending at markets, when other Filipino community members would approach her and talk about their memories from back home. The first edition in 2024 had live music, Filipino food and desserts and a raffle, and the second added an eating contest and live cultural performances.

What's on

  • Food from Ate Kei, Nick's Sari-Sari Food Truck and Brazilian Delights
  • Lumpia-eating contest at 5:10 p.m. (contestants must be there by 5 p.m.)
  • Performances by the Sampaguita Dance Group, music from Mandanas's father Michael, a DJ and a dance demo by The Drop
  • Open karaoke to end the night

Free community resources

Members of the University of Arizona Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association will offer free vital-sign checks and consultations with a physician, and there will be a free clothing swap where people can donate gently used clothing or pick up items.

Tucson Foodie's event listing adds that the first 25 attendees get a goodie bag and that attendees get a raffle ticket for every $10 spent with vendors inside. #ThisIsTucson says more information, a vendor list and the performance schedule are on the event's Instagram page.
