Winnipeg Jets set fifth annual Filipino Heritage Night for 8 November with new Filipino Breakaway Jersey
The Winnipeg Jets will celebrate Manitoba's Filipino community at their 8 November home game against Tampa Bay, with live entertainment, Filipino food and an auction of autographed Filipino Breakaway Jerseys for community initiatives.
The Winnipeg Jets will host their fifth annual Filipino Heritage Night on Sunday, 8 November, when they play the Tampa Bay Lightning at 6 p.m., True North Sports + Entertainment announced on 30 October. The team said the game will celebrate Manitoba's Filipino community with live entertainment, Filipino food and participation from local community groups.
A new Filipino Breakaway Jersey
The release says the Filipino Breakaway Jersey, which carries the Winnipeg Jets Filipino Heritage logo, is the team's newest cultural jersey. The logo was designed by graphic designer Jonato Dalayoan and True North Sports + Entertainment's Marc Gomez, and uses symbolism and colours to reflect Filipino culture, geography and the national flag of the Philippines. A WinnipegJets.com profile of the logo in October 2022 described both designers as Filipino-Canadians.
According to the True North Shop product page, the design features an eight-ray golden sun around the Jets roundel, three stars representing Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, the three colours of the Filipino flag over the jet, and a traditional textile pattern. The shop notes that the jersey sold to fans is a replica fashion jersey, different from the practice jersey issued by the team on Filipino Heritage Night. The jersey and other Filipino Heritage merchandise are available at Jets Gear stores and online at truenorthshop.com.
Six autographed, team-issued Filipino Breakaway Jerseys will be auctioned online at tnyfauction.ca on 8 November from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. CT, with the jerseys displayed at the game. The team said funds raised will go to initiatives that support the Filipino community.
Filipino food at the arena
Two-time Food Network champion Marie Mallari, owner of Sugar Blooms and Cakes bakery, will serve her award-winning Ube Macapuno Cake at the Sweet Spot, according to the release. Select concessions will also offer:
- Lumpia
- Chicken adobo poutine
- Sisig tacos
- A BBQ pork skewer rice bowl
- A Filipino-style Jumbo Jet Dog
- Longanisa pizza
Music, anthems and community honours
The Winnipeg All Stars dance crew, DJ MaJuice and the band Midnight Therapy will perform on the concourse, and Filipino pop punk trio 12/21 will play on the Samsung Stage. The Seven Oaks School Division High School Choir and Sher Policarpio will sing the anthems, while Susie Parker and Eric Labaupa will lead in-game festivities as guest hosts. The Jets said they continue to collaborate with students from Sisler High School's CREATE program to design digital media elements for the gameday presentation.
The team said organisations and individuals making a difference in Winnipeg's Filipino community will be celebrated at the game, including the newly formed Filipino Sports Heritage Council and youth representing the Philippines national hockey team. Filipino youth from the First Shift program, which the release says removes barriers like cost and equipment for new-to-hockey families, will show their hockey skills during the first intermission.
