Check your public healthcare eligibility
Published
Reviewed · Next review
Use Health New Zealand's eligibility guidance and check the evidence your healthcare provider needs.
Public healthcare eligibility depends on your circumstances. Health New Zealand lists eligibility criteria and proof for citizens, residence-class visa holders, work visa holders and other groups. Open the section for your situation and confirm the documents with your provider; a partner's eligibility does not automatically cover every service for you.
The official page also explains limited services available to some people who do not qualify for full public healthcare and recommends comprehensive travel and health insurance for people who are not eligible. Health New Zealand has announced eligibility changes taking effect in December 2026. Check the live page and its Ministry of Health link before relying on an earlier explanation.
