KiwiSaver is a work-based retirement savings scheme run by independent providers. Joining options and eligibility depend on your immigration status, where you live and your work situation. Employees may be automatically enrolled when starting with a new employer and can opt out at that stage. Check the current official requirements before enrolling, choosing a provider or setting contributions.
Check whether you are eligible before joining KiwiSaver. Depending on your situation, you may enrol through your employer or directly with a KiwiSaver scheme provider.
If you are starting work with a new employer, your employer may automatically enrol you if you are eligible. You can stay enrolled or opt out at this stage. Once you have joined KiwiSaver, you cannot opt out.
If you are already employed but not enrolled, you can join through your employer or a scheme provider. People who are self-employed or not working can contact a KiwiSaver provider directly.
Choose and manage KiwiSaver with a scheme provider. Providers invest members’ savings for retirement and can provide financial advice. Your employer and Inland Revenue cannot provide financial advice; contact a financial adviser if you want advice about your financial situation or whether KiwiSaver is right for you.
Employees can change their contribution rate through their employer, myIR account or KiwiSaver provider. If you contribute less than the minimum, you may apply for a temporary rate reduction. Non-employees should follow the contribution terms in their provider contract and discuss changes with their provider. Check the current official contribution guidance for applicable rates and timing.
