Learning about Māori culture and Te Tiriti

Published
Reviewed · Next review

Start with INZ's introduction to Māori culture, language and the Treaty of Waitangi.

Māori are the tangata whenua, the indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand. INZ's introduction describes te ao Māori, including connectedness, hospitality and care, guardianship and wellbeing. As a newcomer, take time to learn local stories and show respect for language and customs.

Te reo Māori is an official language used in signs, workplaces and everyday life. INZ's guide introduces the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, as an agreement between Māori and the British Crown and links to more learning material. This short introduction is a starting point, not a complete explanation of Treaty history or obligations.
