Opening a New Zealand bank account
Published
Reviewed · Next review
Check a bank's account-opening and activation requirements before you arrive or start work.
Some banks let you open an account before arrival, depending on your visa and arrival plans. Ask your chosen bank what it requires. INZ's banking guide explains that you may need an IRD number and links to official information about registered banks.
An account opened overseas may still need activation when you arrive. Banks often ask you to verify identity and a permanent address. If you will be in temporary accommodation, ask the bank which documents it will accept before relying on the account for your first pay.
